Four points from three matches is not the start Ruben Amorim had hoped for, but Manchester City’s return of just three points in the same span is the bigger disappointment. Now, after an opportunity to reset, the two sides meet in what could be a pivotal early-season match. Who will Amorim call on as the Reds aim to pile on the misery for their cross-town rivals?

Team News

Since the win over Burnley, Andre Onana has left for Trabzonspor, and Senne Lammens has arrived from Royal Antwerp. Altay Bayindir has struggled in his three appearances, but Ruben Amorim confirmed that the Turkish international will remain in goal.

The boss’s favored back three, Leny Yoro, Matthijs De Ligt, and Luke Shaw, are available and likely to start.

Noussair Mazraoui returned late against Burnley, but Diogo Dalot is a fresh injury concern after withdrawing from the Portugal squad. The Portuguese Federation cited “muscle discomfort” when announcing the issue and he is doubtful for the Derby.

Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount were subbed off early after injuries against Burnley, with Cunha forced off just after the half-hour mark. Despite withdrawing from the Brazilian squad, the 26-year-old is optimistic, writing on social media: “I’ll be back soon, always with joy and gratitude. Thanks for all the messages.” Mount and Cunha will miss the Derby, but they could be back sooner rather than later.

With Mount and Cunha unavailable for the trip to the Etihad, Benjamin Sesko and Kobbie Mainoo could step in for them. Mainoo already has one iconic moment against the Cityzens, scoring the second goal in Manchester United’s 2-1 FA Cup Final win in 2024.
