With the focus almost solely on the Europa League, Manchester United fell 4-3 at Brentford, meaning the Reds have not won in the Premier League since mid-March.
The Match
A bright start for United led to a goal by Mason Mount, who scored for the first time since last March, also at Brentford. Alejandro Garnacho found the oncoming Mount, who slotted his shot past Mark Flekken to give the visitors a lead.
After the opener from United, Brentford scored four straight to blow the match wide open. An unfortunate own goal from Luke Shaw started the onslaught and Kevin Schade made it 2-1 before halftime.
The 23-year-old German gave the Bees a 3-1 lead in the 70th minute and Yoane Wissa added a fourth just four minutes later.
Manchester United respectably fought back late. Alejandro Garnacho struck a ball into the top corner from outside the box in the 82nd minute before Amad Diallo returned to the scoresheet in stoppage time. Both players finding the net is a positive sign for United ahead of the Europa League Semi-Final second leg and a possible Final.
Next Match
Manchester United welcome Athletic Bilbao to Old Trafford on Thursday with a 3-0 lead. The Reds thrashed 10-man Bilbao at the San Mames last week, setting the tone for the rest of the tie.
The visitors will be without starting center back Danny Vivian, who was sent off in the first leg. A strong performance will be enough to put Ruben Amorim’s side one match away from securing silverware and Champions League football for next season.
