Ruben Amorim credited Manchester United fans when asked about Joshua Zirkzee’s recent uptick in form.
Against Lyon on Thursday, Joshua Zirkzee came off the bench and scored a dramatic goal late on at the Groupama Stadium. The Dutch striker latched onto a perfect delivery from Bruno Fernandes, heading the ball over Lucas Perri for a 2-1 lead in the 89th minute.
Unfortunately, United conceded late to Rayan Cherki, but Zirkzee’s contribution helped United earn a draw heading back to Old Trafford for the second leg.
In December, Zirkzee was substituted in the first half against Newcastle United, his lowest point as a Red. At that moment, many believed the 23-year-old could be heading for the exits in January, but he remained at United and has bounced back with important goals.
Not only has he improved in front of goal, but his confidence is also rising. Recently, Zirkzee has been showing off his technical ability more, a quality that is especially impressive considering the striker’s height.
When asked about Zirkzee’s improvements since that substitution, Ruben Amorim credited Manchester United fans and the player himself.
“Yes, he’s doing a great job. Also, a very important thing was the way the fans react after that incident. So if you see, every time, even if Josh is not playing, every time he gets on the pitch or just warming up, our fans sing the Josh song. So that is massive for the player, so it’s 50-50. Fifty percent part of the fans and 50 percent of Josh.”
Manchester United face Lyon in the second leg of the tie next Thursday. If United are to progress to the Semi-Finals, Zirkzee will likely have a hand in the victory.
