Manchester United will meet Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday for the 196th Manchester Derby.
After falling to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, Manchester United have an opportunity to complete a league double of their cross-town rivals. The Reds won the first meeting this season 2-1 behind late heroics from Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes.
Team News
Matthijs De Ligt has a fresh injury concern after the match against Forest. Ruben Amorim confirmed that the standout defender is doubtful for Sunday, saying, “I think Matta [de Ligt] has an issue. He has something during the game [at Forest] and we have to assess. I think the rest is normal.”
De Ligt’s issue is less concerning than it would have been a week ago, as Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro returned to action on Tuesday. Yoro logged 88 minutes in his start, while Maguire came on late and nearly leveled the score with the final kick of the match.
Mason Mount also returned to action for the first time since December 15th, when he came on in the 78th minute. After a poor performance from Joshua Zirkzee, Mount could start if he is deemed fit enough to play extended minutes.
Amorim also provided positive news on Kobbie Mainoo, who could join the matchday squad on Sunday.
“I think Kobbie is returning to training, so we’ll see and assess for this game already,” said Amorim. “Of course, he cannot play a full game, he’s a long time without training.
After several positive performances for club and country, Rasmus Hojlund came off the bench and provided a spark for Manchester United against Nottingham Forest. The Dane should get the opportunity to lead the line against City on Sunday.
Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Martinez, Jonny Evans, and Amad will remain out with their longer-term injuries.
