Manchester United lost 1-0 to Tottenham in London on Sunday to drop to 15th place in the league.

Ruben Amorim made just one substitution in the loss, a debut for Chido Obi in the 90th minute. So, how did the starting eleven fare in the defeat?

Starting Eleven

Andre Onana: 5 – Onana failed to push the ball away on a shot from Bergvall that allowed Maddison to score. While he made six other saves, Maddison’s goal finished as the deciding factor in the match, dooming United to a 1-0 defeat.

Noussair Mazraoui: 6 – Mazraoui had an overall solid match, making five tackles, three clearances, and two interceptions. However, the Moroccan also was dribbled past five times and committed three fouls, putting a damper on his defensive contributions.

Harry Maguire: 6 – Maguire was untested for the most part, with many of the Tottenham attacks coming from the sides. He blocked a shot and had three clearances and tackles.

Matthijs De Ligt: 7 – De Ligt was poor in the buildup to the Tottenham goal, but he was the best player on the pitch for the rest of the match. The Dutch defender was everywhere, blocking four shots and clearing seven times. With several center backs out due to injury, De Ligt will need to continue to put in strong performances if United are to find success in the remainder of the season.

Diogo Dalot: 5 – Dalot didn’t provide much to discuss but was decent overall. Mazraoui was a lot more involved in the right side of defense.

Casemiro: 6 – Casemiro did many good things in the midfield, including winning ten duels and seven tackles. However, he was dribbled past four times and was slow in transition, showing why he has fallen down the pecking order in Amorim’s team selections.

Bruno Fernandes: 7 – Fernandes should have had an assist, but Garnacho blasted a perfect chance to level over the bar. Per usual, the captain was the most involved United player with 103 touches, but his new, deeper role limits his influence in attack.

Patrick Dorgu: 7 – Dorgu showed why United paid €30 million for him in January in the loss. The Dane won 9/10 duels, four tackles, and added two key passes.

Joshua Zirkzee: 6 – Zirkzee grew into the match after struggling early. He could have done better on a late header but flashed the shot wide. He was impressive in a more attacking midfield role.

Alejandro Garnacho: 5 – Garnacho was bright and dangerous but missed the best opportunity of the match. To take the next step in his career, the Argentine must improve his finishing.

Rasmus Hojlund: 5 – While Hojlund failed to find the back of the net, he did put two shots on target and had another blocked. The performance was still not what is needed from a United striker, but it was an improvement for the Dane.

Substitutes

Chido Obi: NR – Obi made his Premier League debut in stoppage time. The 17-year-old became the first academy player given his debut by Ruben Amorim.

Man of the Match: Matthijs De Ligt
