United Beyond Manchester

Manchester United sealed a final piece of January business as Tyrell Malacia returned to the Eredivisie on loan to PSV Eindhoven.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Malacia joins the Dutch side on an initial six-month loan, with a €10 million buy option. United has also included a 30% sell-on clause to the possible permanent deal.

Why This is the End for Malacia at Old Trafford

The small buy clause, which is €5 million less than Manchester United paid for Malacia in 2022, indicates a desire by the club to move the 25-year-old permanently. Tack on the 30% sell-on clause, and it’s clear that United are hoping for bonus profit off the deal in the future.

Going beyond the transfer details, Ruben Amorim clearly feels that even in this horrendous version of Manchester United, Tyrell Malacia has no place. He started twice in the Premier League under the new manager and was subbed off at the half both times. Despite being the only left-footed option for left wing-back, Malacia played in three of thirteen league matches, with Amorim opting for the right-footed Diogo Dalot far more often.

The nail in the coffin was United’s relentless pursuit and eventual purchase of Patrick Dorgu. Club officials felt that of all the positions that need upgrades, the focus for January was going to be an investment in a left wing-back. The arrival of Dorgu not only pushes Malacia out of the squad but also blocks any potential return after the loan deal.

Like Marcus Rashford, Tyrell Malacia needed a new start away from Old Trafford. PSV provided it, and he won’t be coming back.
