When Antony arrived at Manchester United in 2022 for €90 million, Erik Ten Hag believed he had brought in the next great United winger. Instead, Antony became the most expensive mistake in the club’s transfer history.

In 96 appearances, the 24-year-old scored twelve goals and assisted five, a far cry from the expected contribution of a player bought for his price.

Antony’s best moment as a Red came in the classic FA Cup Quarterfinal against Liverpool. After coming on as a substitute, the Brazilian scored a brilliant goal on the turn to level the match and force extra time. Of course, United won the match 4-3 as Amad Diallo scored a breakaway goal at the death.

This season, Antony has only started three matches, quickly becoming one of the first names on the exit list for Ruben Amorim after he took over. Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, he has secured a loan move to Real Betis. The famed journalist’s post on X read:

“Antony to Real Betis, here we go! Verbal agreement in place between all parties with Man United too. Documents being checked; then time for travel and medical tests.

“United will let him leave on loan deal with 𝐧𝐨 buy clause. He’ll be formally back to United in June.”

One important point regarding the loan is the absence of a buy clause. Antony has no future at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim, but he will return to Manchester at the end of the season because of this exclusion.

Antony’s loan is the first big move for United during the January window. Now, the club may look to add a player late to boost Amorim’s squad for the remainder of the season.
