Manchester United legend Denis Law has sadly passed away at the age of 84.
Manchester United released this statement on behalf of Law’s family:
“It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace.
“We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently.
“We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.”
“The King” arrived in Manchester in July 1962 and was an immediate hit. In his first season under Sir Matt Busby, the Scot scored 29 goals in 44 matches and helped lead the club to an FA Cup trophy.
However, it was Law’s second season that etched his name in the history books. In 1963/1964, he averaged more than a goal per game with 46 goals in 42 games. That goal record, along with a ridiculous 11 goals for his nation, helped Law become the first and only Scottish player to ever win the Ballon d’Or.
During his time at Manchester United, Denis Law scored 237 goals in 406 appearances and contributed 12 assists. In addition to winning the FA Cup and the Ballon d’Or, he helped lead the team to two English Championships, two English Super Cups, and a European Cup. Law was also the top scorer in the 1968/1969 European Cup season.
Denis Law will always be remembered as a beloved member of the ‘United Trinity’ alongside George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton. The trio are immortalized in a statue outside of Old Trafford.
While Law is no longer with us, his memory will live on in the minds of every Manchester United and Scotland fan.
