A strong defensive performance after a red card from Diogo Dalot helped Manchester United steal an improbable FA Cup win at the Emirates. See ratings for each player below.
Starting Eleven
Altay Bayindir: 7 – While by no means a perfect day for the backup keeper, Bayindir did have several great moments. A stunning penalty save against Martin Odegaard in normal time helped the Reds stay alive. He denied good chances from Declan Rice, and his save during the penalty shootout helped secure United’s progression in the FA Cup.
Lisandro Martinez: 7 – Martinez played the full 120, defending well with four tackles and eventually scoring a penalty in the shootout.
Harry Maguire: 9 – Maguire excelled in aerial duels, successfully clearing every long ball and cross directed at the United defense. The 31-year-old made eleven clearances, blocked five shots, and contributed two tackles along with one interception. The penalty he conceded was unfortunate and likely would have been overturned if VAR had been available. Unfortunately, his match came to an early end due to an injury in the 103rd minute.
Matthijs De Ligt: 8 – De Ligt was immense alongside Harry Maguire. The Dutch center-back had seven clearances, including a crucial one off the line late in the match. He also came through with a couple of well-timed blocks to keep Arsenal from adding to their goal.
Diogo Dalot: 2 – Dalot’s red card was the turning point in the match, and he is lucky that his team came together to pull out the win. Even before his sending-off, Dalot was not playing well. He finished the day with a 58% passing accuracy mark and lost possession ten times.
Kobbie Mainoo: 7 – The transfer rumors and contract discussions are not affecting Mainoo’s play, as he showed his quality in the midfield against Arsenal. The 19-year-old drew three fouls, won eight duels, had two tackles and clearances, and a shot on target. He showed composure on the ball and controlled parts of the match alongside Manuel Ugarte before being subbed off late in normal time.
Manuel Ugarte: 6 – Ugarte was solid at the Emirates, playing a full 90 before coming off at the start of extra time. He made two tackles and an interception, but he struggled in duels, winning just four out of eleven combined in the air and on the ground.
Noussair Mazraoui: 7 – Mazraoui was key when crosses fell to the back post, as he was able to clear any chance before Arsenal’s wingers arrived. The Moroccan international had eight clearances, and his five tackles were the most from anyone on the field.
Bruno Fernandes: 7 – When a team secures a win with a man down, the captain deserves credit. Fernandes helped keep the team focused and together through the end. His goal in normal time was struck perfectly, and his penalty in the shootout helped set the tone.
Alejandro Garnacho: 7 – In his first start since being dropped from the squad against Manchester City, Garnacho showed improvement. The Argentine made the most of a mistake from Gabriel and provided an assist for Bruno Fernandes. He has work to do, but this is a step in the right direction for the 20-year-old.
Rasmus Hojlund: 4 – Hojlund struggled to get involved and failed to get a shot off in his 81 minutes.
Substitutes
Joshua Zirkzee: 7 – Zirkzee blocked out the noise, believed in himself and his team, and dispatched a winning penalty in the shootout. The Dutch striker’s performance was admirable under the recent scrutiny he has received, as he was a danger in extra time.
Amad Diallo: 7 – Amad quickly made an impact after coming on the pitch and was a creative threat despite United being down a man. He slotted his penalty past David Raya with ease just before Bayindir’s save.
Toby Collyer: 6 – Casemiro was left out of the squad amid talks of a transfer to Saudi Arabia, providing an opportunity for Collyer to make his season debut. The 21-year-old added energy, defending effectively and covering extensive ground. If no new midfielder joins during this transfer window, Collyer could have a more significant role for the rest of the season.
Tyrell Malacia: 6 – Malacia did not see much of the ball after coming on for extra time but helped keep the Gunners out to earn a penalty shootout.
Leny Yoro: 7 – Yoro defended well after coming on for Harry Maguire and coolly finished his penalty.
Man of the Match: Harry Maguire
