After losing 2-0 at Wolves, Manchester United is closer to relegation than the Champions League. Many players underperformed, while others positively stood out despite the loss. My ratings are below.
Starting Eleven
Andre Onana: 2 – Onana failed to command his box on the corner scored by Cunha. Things are unraveling for the 28-year-old, and questions are rightly being asked about his future as United’s number 1.
Leny Yoro: 5 – Yoro showed his youth at times against Wolves. The 19-year-old failed to contain Wolves attackers and was dribbled past once. He did contribute three tackles and four clearances before going off for Antony.
Harry Maguire: 7 – Maguire defended well all match, contributing five clearances, four interceptions, a tackle, and a blocked shot. The English center-back is quietly impressing under Amorim and will see more minutes if he continues playing well.
Lisandro Martinez: 6 – Martinez was closer to his normal self against Wolves with four clearances and two tackles.
Noussair Mazraoui: 5 – Mazraoui had a decent showing but failed to provide much going forward. When playing as a wing-back, the Moroccan hasn’t performed as well as when he started as a right center-back.
Manuel Ugarte: 7 – Ugarte is quickly becoming Manchester United’s best midfielder. The 23-year-old won every duel he was in, completed four tackles, and was an all-around force. Amorim likes him, and he thrives on this system. Ugarte will be a long-term starter in this team.
Kobbie Mainoo: 5 – Mainoo started strong but struggled as the match progressed. In a crucial midfield role, the young star completed only 69% of his passes and failed to stop the Wolves midfielders during counter-attacks.
Diogo Dalot: 4 – Outside of forcing an early save, Dalot failed to impact the game. His poor pass contributed to the sequence that resulted in Bruno Fernandes’ red card, which doomed United early in the second half. The 25-year-old has recorded just 2 assists in 27 matches.
Amad Diallo: 5 – Amad struggled to get going in a dysfunctional attack. The winger lost possession eighteen times and was unable to affect the game like he has in recent matches.
Bruno Fernandes: 1 – When your team is struggling, the captain has to step up. Instead, Bruno Fernandes was sent off for a second yellow on a reckless challenge just after halftime.
Rasmus Hojlund: 2 – Hojlund played 79 minutes and had just 14 total touches. He was useless holding the ball up today and failed to get a shot off. If he wants to show Amorim that he can lead this attack, the Dane must find ways to get more involved.
Substitutes
Christian Eriksen: 5 – Eriksen was unable to provide a similar spark to several other subs, losing the ball 10 times in 27 minutes and failing to register any meaningful attacking actions.
Casemiro: 6 – Casemiro came on and played well, completing two crosses, two key passes, and a shot on target. While the 32-year-old lacks the legs to play meaningful minutes, he can still be a spark late in matches.
Antony: 6 – Antony brought a spark off the bench and was inches away from a leveler at 1-0 that went just past the post. The Brazilian also had a key pass and completed two dribbles.
Alejandro Garnacho: NR – Garnacho did not add much and came on too late to affect the match down a man.
Joshua Zirkzee: NR – Zirkzee had five touches in eleven minutes and was hampered by United playing down a man.
Man of the Match: Harry Maguire
