It’s no secret that Mason Mount has not lived up to his £60 million price tag. Since joining Manchester United last year, the 25-year-old has had one goal and one assist in twenty-six appearances. However, the arrival of Ruben Amorim presents the former Chelsea midfielder with an opportunity to revive his career at Old Trafford.
In Thomas Tuchel’s 3-4-2-1, Mount thrived. He scored 13 goals and assisted 16 more in the 2021/2022 season, leading to a Chelsea Player of the Year Award.
Now, Mount has an opportunity to replicate his previous success in the 3-4-2-1 system under Ruben Amorim. The new United boss has already tipped the midfielder for success, saying, “I love that kid.”
Amorim continued, “He played in this system [at Chelsea], so it’s perfect for him. I have two positions for Mason Mount, so he should be very happy!”
Mason Mount can play in a center midfield or an attacking midfield role in the new system. At Chelsea, he flourished as one of the two attackers playing off the striker. With Amorim, Mount could find himself again in that position or as one of the two box-to-box players. Manchester United currently lacks other box-to-box options, which could open the door for Mount to drop into that position.
The most important thing for Mount is to stay healthy. He has already had three injuries in two years, including a calf injury that forced him to miss 21 games last season. If the former England international can stay healthy, Ruben Amorim can get the most out of him.
Mason Mount will be given the opportunity to succeed under Amorim. Will he be able to make the most of it?
