Manchester United’s Old Trafford redevelopment project will likely result in the demolishing of the iconic stadium in favor of a brand-new 100,000-seat venue. The new stadium would cost around £2 billion and many are concerned with how the United owners will raise the funds.
Old Trafford ticket prices have risen over the past two seasons amid the club’s financial struggles. The Manchester United Supporter’s Trust (MUST) has implored the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe to raise the money without hiking prices again.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, MUST representatives said, “Everyone agrees Old Trafford needs updating but the big question is how that is funded. Other clubs have funded stadium work through debt, but due to the existing huge debt burden the Glazers have placed on United, that option is not open to us.”
“This is an investment project so should be funded by capital, not ticket prices. We believe the owners should either invest themselves or issue new shares to allow others – including fans – to invest to make this happen. Stadium improvements should not be funded by big-ticket increases on ordinary match-going reds.”
Throughout the Glazers’ reign, fans have become increasingly disconnected from those in charge at Manchester United. Their unwillingness to treat the club and fans with respect has led them to become villains at United. The addition of Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been a breath of fresh air, as fans believe he can bring about real change.
If the 72-year-old decides to raise ticket prices to fund a new stadium, he risks losing the trust of many Manchester United supporters. The club’s mismanagement should not negatively impact those who cherish the matchday experience. It is the responsibility of those who have caused harm to make amends by investing in the club or issuing new shares.
The supporters of Manchester United urge Sir Jim Ratcliffe to heed the warning and avoid damaging the matchday experience.
