Manchester United dropped points once again while in a winning position against Chelsea. A late lead in the second half was quickly canceled out, resulting in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. Although the draw was disappointing, the team showed a more defined identity under the interim manager.
The first half was a frenzy of attack, with both sides pushing quickly and pressing high. Despite the fast-paced nature of the affair, neither side truly troubled either goalkeeper.
Manchester United’s best chance of the first half came with the final kick before the whistle. A beautiful ball from Bruno Fernandes was struck well by Marcus Rashford, but the ball flicked off the frame of the goal.
After a frantic first half, the second half started slowly. Only in the last twenty minutes did real action occur.
Manchester United found the opening goal in the 70th minute. A brilliant ball over the top from Casemiro found Rasmus Hojlund, who touched around Robert Sanchez and was could by the Chelsea goalkeeper. The ensuing penalty was coolly converted by Bruno Fernandes for a United lead.
Unfortunately, the advantage did not last long, and Chelsea leveled within three minutes. Moises Caicedo sweetly hit the ball first time out of the air and found Andre Onana’s bottom corner following a corner kick.
Neither team was able to find a late winner, and United dropped more points at home in the league.
Despite the draw, there were clear positives for Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s team. Under the interim manager, the squad appears to be quicker and supports the attack with improved forward runs. Ruben Amorim should certainly keep Van Nistelrooy on his coaching staff when he takes over.
Manchester United’s next match will be against PAOK in the Europa League on Thursday.
