After a poor start in the Premier League and Europa League, Manchester United have sacked manager Erik Ten Hag. Ruud Van Nistelrooy will step in as the interim manager, but the club is looking to find Ten Hag’s replacement quickly.

According to David Ornstein, Ruben Amorim has emerged as the leading candidate to take the Old Trafford job. Ornstein reports that Amorim is open to the job and that United is willing to pay the Portuguese manager’s release clause.

The 39-year-old has been in charge of Sporting CP since March 2020 and has won the Portuguese League twice. He also has won the Portuguese League Cup three times, once with Braga, and has a Portuguese Super Cup title to his name. Amorim’s managerial links go beyond Manchester United, as Manchester City, among other clubs, hold an interest in the rising star.

If United seals a move for Amorim, it could mean a complete philosophy change for the team. Ruben Amorim’s three-back system and tactical prowess are the reasons he is a coveted talent, but it would mark a distinct tactical switch for Manchester United. Other managers have come and gone after failing to instill their philosophy at United, so the new manager will need to take control of the team and be an excellent communicator.

Hopefully, any move will be swift, allowing the manager to assess what he has and potentially needs in the January transfer window.

Is Ruben Amorim the right man for Manchester United?
