On the season return to Leigh Sports Village, the Manchester United Women cruised to a victory over North-West Rivals Liverpool. The 2-0 win sends the Reds to the next round of the FA Women’s League Cup.
Marc Skinner’s side was on top from the start and grabbed the first goal in the 9th minute. Melvine Malard volleyed home after a corner for her first of the season.
A second-half goal from Rachel Williams on a poor defensive giveaway was the nail in the coffin for Liverpool, and the Reds earned a third straight victory to open the season.
Through three matches, the contributions have been coming from everyone. Melvine Malard and Rachel Williams scored today, while Leah Galton and Geyse also have one each. Grace Clinton is the only Red with multiple goals, including the decisive finish against Everton.
Last season, Skinner’s team finished outside of the Champions League spots but won the FA Women’s Cup 4-0. This season, the expectations are higher, as the team aims to win multiple trophies and, at a minimum, qualify for the Champions League.
The Manchester United Women next face Tottenham at home on October 13th.
