Manchester United needs an experienced striker to go with young talents Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee. The veteran attacking need is what makes the reported move for Evan Ferguson so confusing.

According to the Daily Star, Manchester United leaders are concerned that the window to sign Evan Ferguson could be closing. If Chelsea miss out on the chance to sign Victor Osimhen, the Blues may turn to the 19-year-old Irishman.

It is no secret that United has long been an admirer of Ferguson. The Reds have weighed the possibility of signing him multiple summers in a row. With Dan Ashworth now at the helm, a move for the striker would be simpler, as Ferguson moved to Brighton when he was there.

Despite Ferguson being a quality young talent, Manchester United should not be dropping €50 million on a player the club does not need. Manchester United needs a proven goalscorer, one who can finish and has experience, not another player who needs time to develop. With 20-year-old Rasmus Hojlund and 23-year-old Joshua Zirkzee already in Manchester, adding Ferguson does nothing to help the lack of goals right now.

Manchester United must turn attention toward a player like Ivan Toney if another striker is going to be brought in this summer. While center midfield should be a priority, signing a layer like Toney gives the United front line a quality finisher who could also help the younger players develop.

Erik Ten Hag has one healthy striker heading into the season opener against Fulham, as Hojlund picked up an injury in pre-season. These injuries are another reason why a striker should be signed.

Should United go after Ferguson and Toney or wait longer before pursuing another striker?
