Manchester United has thus far failed to bring in a long-term partner for Kobbie Mainoo. Rumors have come and gone, yet no new midfielders have arrived at Old Trafford. Joao Neves, Adrien Rabiot, Manuel Ugarte, and more have all been linked to join United at some point this summer. Unfortunately, no move has panned out, and United are now forced to look at possible stop-gap solutions.

The main player being linked is Sander Berge. The Norwegian midfielder is a solid Premier League player, but Manchester United is not a team for “solid.” The players brought into the club should be ones who push United closer to challenging for a title. Berge starting in the midfield fails to push the needle closer to that goal.

This is not the first time failed negotiations have hampered United and forced the club into bad decisions. In 2013, David Moyes wanted a player like Thiago, Cesc Fabregas, or Gareth Bale. Yet, when none of those players arrived at Old Trafford, Moyes ended up with Marouane Fellaini. The Belgian failed to make an impact at United and finished his time at the club as a super-sub brought on for headers.

Other panic transfers have included Alexis Sanchez, who was bought simply to stop Manchester City from getting him, Radamel Falcao, Odion Ighalo, and Wout Weghorst.

Would Sander Berge make a positive impact on Erik Ten Hag’s team, or would he be another late transfer window mistake?
