Just a week and a half before the first competitive match of the season, first-team coach Steve McClaren accepted the manager position for the Jamaican national team. Three straight losses in the Copa America meant Heimar Hallgrimsson departed, and the nation has now turned to the 63-year-old Englishman.

McClaren takes over the job at a critical time. The Reggae Boyz are trying to make their first World Cup appearance since 1998.

Jamaican FA President Michael Ricketts said: “We are confident we made the right decision, and we are looking forward to him guiding our nation towards the 2026 Fifa World Cup.”

Jamaica is ranked 59th in the world but has secured some top-ranked l players in recent years. Michael Antonio, Damarai Gray, and Leon Bailey have all switched to join the Reggae Boyz. Despite the influx of talent, the results have not followed.

The Jamaican project is clear, and bringing in a coach of McClaren’s caliber shows real intent from the nation. Is Steve McClaren the man to turn Jamaica’s fortunes around?
