When Manchester United and Chelsea meet, you typically expect quality. With both sides underperforming this season, the crazy game we got was perhaps more expected than that historical quality. Below, we look at how the match unfolded and the individual performances from the Reds.
First Half
It was a frantic start at Stamford Bridge, with each team having a shot inside the first minute. Unfortunately, Chelsea was the side that found the net first. Conor Gallagher buried a shot under Andre Onana from the top of the box after a cutback from Malo Gusto. Dalot stepped high, lost the ball, and no one tracked Gallagher from the midfield. Gallagher’s finish put Chelsea up 1-0 inside four minutes.
Manchester United had a decent response and looked good moving forward, but Antony conceded a soft penalty in the 17th minute. Cole Palmer stepped up and confidently placed the penalty past Onana, and Chelsea took a quick 2-0 lead.
Chelsea had a chance to make it 3-0 in the 23rd minute, but Axel Disasi put the free header over the bar. No one tracked him on Gallagher’s free-kick, and he should have found the net.
Manchester United got back into the match in the 34th minute when Moises Caicedo played a poor pass back straight to Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentine winger picked the ball up and placed his finish past Petrovic to make it 2-1. It was the gift United needed after such a poor start to the match.
Four minutes later, Manchester United were level at two. Diogo Dalot was given time and space to pick out a cross and he found Bruno Fernandes brilliantly on the back post. The United captain placed his header into the far corner confidently as he was unmarked on the back post.
Just before the half, United lost the ball in the midfield and were nearly punished, but the post came to the rescue. Conor Gallagher found a good position inside the box and nearly had a second first-half goal.
The hectic first half ended 2-2 with mistakes and good moves galore. Chelsea and Disasi will rue the opportunity to put United away with the free header at the back post. Manchester United showed heart in the first half to come back from two down to level and will be thankful that Chelsea were not more clinical.
Second Half
The second half started wide open, and the state of the game was epitomized by a solo run by Harry Maguire. Maguire intercepted a poor pass from Enzo Fernandez, dribbled through the Chelsea defense, and hit a vicious strike over the bar.
After a prolonged attack from the Blues in the 53rd minute, Manchester United had an opportunity on the break through Bruno Fernandes. Rasmus Hojlund tore through the midfield and played a ball to Bruno, but his shot only found the top of the stands.
Jonny Evans was removed in the 65th minute after only coming on at half for an injured Varane. It’s an unfortunate injury for the 37-year-old, as he was great in the minutes he was on.
Two minutes after United made changes, Antony responded to his doubters brilliantly. Manchester United broke with pace, and Antony played a stunning ball with the outside of his foot that Alejandro Garnacho headed in for his second goal of the game. After going down 2-0, Manchester United took a 3-2 lead.
Mason Mount came on in the 85th minute to a chorus of boos from the home crowd as he made his return to Stamford Bridge.
Manchester United defended well the rest of the second half and found some control until late in stoppage time. Ole’s rang out from the traveling supporters in the early part of the added minutes. Those chants would soon be proven premature.
In the 96th minute, a second questionable penalty was awarded to Chelsea after minimal contact from Diogo Dalot saw Noni Madueke tumble to the ground. The VAR had a long look but sided with the on-field decision. Cole Palmer stepped up and scored his second penalty of the match in the 100th minute.
Two minutes later, Manchester United’s defense crumbled, and Cole Palmer scored after a wicked deflection to complete his hat-trick and win it for Chelsea. How Palmer was so open in the box, we will never know.
A wild, wild game turned dark for United fans as Chelsea completed a 4-3 win. Two penalties and a deflected goal gave Cole Palmer a massive hat-trick to salvage a big win for his club. A game that seemed to be trending the Reds way fell apart and will cause major questions to be asked of the current squad and manager.
Man of the Match
Alejandro Garnacho’s two goals should have been enough for a United win. He was dangerous going forward, and his first-half finish brought the away side back into the game. His second-half header was brave, with Petrovic coming out of the Chelsea goal. That goal gave United the lead. A special shoutout also goes to Antony, who silenced his critics with a great display of quality and passion.

Looking Ahead
Manchester United return home to face Liverpool for the second time in a matter of a few weeks. Manchester United won 4-3 in a thrilling FA Cup win, and Liverpool will be looking for payback. United’s wild loss to Chelsea will do the squad no favors with the quick turnaround.
Possible muscle injuries to Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans could leave the Reds with only Willy Kambwala and Harry Maguire as healthy center-backs. This would place the young Kambwala into a massive spot at a critical point in the season.
Manchester United needs a result at Old Trafford after the heartbreak of today’s match. Can the Reds bounce back with a win?
