Recent reports say that the Ineos team is keeping tabs on several managers in the case that Erik Ten Hag is sacked. One of the names being discussed is current England and former Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate.
Gareth Southgate has managed the Three Lions since 2016 and has lost a semi-final and quarter-final with the team in the past two World Cups. The heartbreak of the 2020 Euros epitomizes his England reign. Some good performances, but always falling short when it matters. In an era where England has enormous talent, Southgate has managed to collect zero trophies and failed to gain the trust of English fans.
Despite these shortcomings, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is rumored to be a fan of Southgate and is intrigued by the idea of bringing him to Old Trafford.
I believe that if Erik Ten Hag is sacked, Manchester United should not pursue Southgate. The rigors of club management are very different than international management. Southgate has already shown he struggles at the club level with Middlesbrough, and Manchester United is a much bigger task. United needs a leader who can command a dressing room and motivate players to succeed. Southgate is not the man to bring glory back to Old Trafford and should be avoided at all costs.
The fan responses to these reports have not been happy, and we have included several of these below from X (Formerly Twitter).
These fans are leading the outcry over the reported interest. What are your thoughts on bringing Gareth Southgate to Manchester United?
