John Henry Davies played a pivotal role in the history of Manchester United, saving the club from financial ruin and laying the groundwork for its future success.

Born in 1854, Davies was a successful brewery owner and a passionate sports enthusiast. In 1902, he became involved with Newton Health LYR FC, the precursor to Manchester United, when he was approached by a group of local businessmen who were struggling to keep the club afloat.

At the time, Newton Health was facing significant financial difficulties. The club was heavily in debt and on the brink of bankruptcy. Many feared that the club would go out of existence, threatening the future of professional football in Manchester. Recognizing the club’s potential and the importance of football to the community, Davies stepped in to help.

In 1902, Davies made a crucial decision to invest his own money into Newton Health, effectively saving the club from collapse. He became the majority shareholder and took on the role of club chairman. He renamed the club Manchester United so that it could be a club for the whole city.

Manchester United found quick success under Davies and were promoted to the First Division in 1906. After being promoted, United won the league in 1908 and 1911 while also winning the FA Cup in 1909.

Under his leadership, Davies implemented several changes to stabilize the club’s finances and set it on a path to success.

One of Davies’ most significant contributions was the construction of Old Trafford, United’s iconic stadium. Recognizing the need for a modern, larger venue to accommodate the growing fan base, Davies oversaw the planning and financing of the stadium.

Old Trafford opened its doors in 1910 and quickly became a symbol of Manchester United’s ambition and stature in English football. The first-ever game played at Old Trafford was against Liverpool.

In addition to his financial support, Davies also played a key role in shaping the club’s identity and culture. He emphasized the importance of developing young talent and building a strong sense of community among players and fans. His vision for Manchester United laid the foundation for the club’s future achievements.

His emphasis on developing young players has held true to this day, as Manchester United’s academy is known as one of the best in the world. Current first team players, such as Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho, first played in the academy system.

Despite his significant contributions, Davies’ time at Manchester United was not without controversy. His involvement in the controversial transfer of Welsh international Billy Meredith led to allegations of bribery and corruption. However, Davies was ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing, and his legacy remained intact.

John Henry Davies passed away in 1927, but his impact on Manchester United endures to this day. His leadership and foresight saved the club from oblivion and transformed it into one of the most successful and iconic football clubs in the world.
