When the goals stop coming, so do the wins, and after blazing through the Europa League knockout rounds, Manchester United fell silent when it mattered most. A 1-0 defeat to Tottenham marks a new low and could significantly affect their summer transfer plans.

Match Flow

Despite the enormity of the occasion, both Tottenham and Manchester United started with high attacking energy. The Reds found success playing through Amad Diallo, while Spurs exploited the wings with Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro.

United controlled possession, but it was their Premier League foes who struck first.

Tottenham broke the deadlock just before halftime. A well-timed inside channel run by Rodrigo Bentancur released Pape Sarr in space, and he delivered a low cross to the near post. Brennan Johnson lost his markers, Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu, creating chaos in the box. In the scramble, Shaw inadvertently deflected the ball towards United’s goal, allowing Johnson to tap it in.

United dominated possession, passes, shots, and free kicks in the first half, but failed to make any of it count.

Rasmus Hojlund thought he had leveled in the second half, but Micky Van De Ven kept him out. A miscommunication with Guglielmo Vicario and his defenders caused a mistake, giving Hojlund a header on target. The attempt passed Vicario, but a flying Van De Ven acrobatically cleared the ball off the line, preserving Tottenham’s advantage.

United had one more late chance, but Luke Shaw put his header too close to Vicario, and the goalkeeper batted the ball away.

What’s Next for United?

No title. No Europe. No additional financial aid. United will need to be calculated and smart with their summer moves. Fringe players and players on loan must be sold and replaced, and Ruben Amorim needs players who fit his style.

One aspect of the game that Amorim needs to work on most with his players is attacking identity. While Tottenham exploited the wing areas and the pockets of space in the channels, United’s attacks seemed aimless and desperate. A true attacking identity is necessary, or the next Manchester United striker will struggle the same way that Rasmus Hojlund has.

Next season, United must embrace the lack of European football, use the extra rest, and push on to ensure the club does not repeat the mistakes of this season.
