Starting Eleven

Altay Bayindir: 3 – Bayindir was no improvement over Andre Onana. The Turkish goalkeeper made a decent save in the first half but was directly at fault for Newcastle’s fourth.

Noussair Mazraoui: 4 – Mazraoui was unusually poor, and his slip in the second half led to Harvey Barnes’ second. The English winger was too much for Mazraoui, who has been a reliable player this season.

Victor Lindelof: 4 – Lindelof was given a central role in defense and struggled. Alexander Isak and the other attackers caused the Swede all types of problems and he failed to keep the backline organized.

Leny Yoro: 5 – Along with the other defenders, Yoro struggled with his positioning. He was caught out on Tonali’s goal, though the 19-year-old contributed with seven clearances and two tackles.

Diogo Dalot: 5 – Dalot brilliantly assisted Garnacho’s goal but was poor defensively. He was beaten on the wing by Livramento early in the second half in a move that gave the hosts the lead for good.

Christian Eriksen: 4 – Eriksen was barely involved in the game and could not keep up with the stronger, faster Newcastle midfielders. The Dane still has great vision and passing ability but those qualities are often overshadowed by his lack of pace.

Manuel Ugarte: 5 – Ugarte was solid at breaking up play in the midfield and was good in possession. He started the break that led to Garnacho’s goal with a smart move and quick pass.

Harry Amass: 6 – Amass was decent on the left in his full Premier League debut. He was one of the few United defenders who did not make a critical error, though he could have had a bigger impact going forward.

Bruno Fernandes: 6 – Bruno, as always, brought energy and fight, but was unable to have his typical attacking impact.

Alejandro Garnacho: 7 – Garnacho scored a much-needed goal with a smart, side-footed finish in the 37th minute. He was removed by Amorim early in the second half, likely with the Lyon match in mind.

Joshua Zirkzee: 6 – Zirkzee was positive, nearly scoring a well-worked goal inside the first fifteen minutes. Unfortunately, a hamstring injury forced him off early in the second half, putting his involvement on Thursday in doubt.

Substitutes

Rasmus Hojlund: 4 – Hojlund missed his one big chance after coming on. The Danish striker needs to be ready for Thursday if Zirkzee is unavailable.

Patrick Dorgu: 6 – Dorgu was given a rest as Harry Amass was handed a first start. He was bright and energetic after coming on, though he was beaten several times on the wing.

Mason Mount: 5 – Mount did not see much of the ball in his 35 minutes, though he had a shot on target.

Luke Shaw: 6 – Shaw had two key passes off the bench and created a big chance in his twelve minutes. It was his first appearance since December 1.

Kobbie Mainoo: NR – Mainoo has made two appearances since his injury and should be back in the starting eleven soon.

Man of the Match: Alejandro Garnacho
