Starting Eleven

Andre Onana: 6 – Onana and Maguire demonstrated a possible rift between the goalkeeper and his defenders early on a near-crucial mistake. After that, though, Onana made several big stops, especially in the second half and extra time.

Leny Yoro: 6 – Yoro showed his pace and strength while playing on his less-favored left side. The young defender was matched against Adama Traore and kept the speedy winger quiet.

Harry Maguire: 7 – Maguire was strong at the heart of the United defense and cleared eight times. He had a few critical stops, including one on Rodrigo Muniz.

Matthijs De Ligt: 8 – De Ligt has improved in possession since arriving at United and showed that with some great switches of play. He combined that with fantastic defensive work, clearing nine times and making six tackles.

Diogo Dalot: 8 – Dalot had one of his best games of the season and marked it with a great assist to Bruno Fernandes. He had three key passes in attack, eight clearances, and four tackles defensively. With Dorgu out for two more domestic matches, Dalot will likely stay on the left against Arsenal and Leicester City.

Christian Eriksen: 6 – Eriksen marked his 68 minutes with his passing quality. When in space, there are few in world football who can pick out passes better than the Danish midfielder, and he showcased that with flicks and long balls against Fulham.

Manuel Ugarte: 6 – Ugarte broke up play well in the midfield, winning two duels, clearing twice, and intercepting once. His yellow card likely contributed to his early second-half exit, as he was replaced by Alejandro Garnacho.

Noussair Mazraoui: 5 – Mazraoui was slow to challenge Calvin Bassey on his headed goal and was uncharacteristically poor in possession. With Dorgu available on Thursday, the Moroccan may get a rest in the Europa League first leg.

Bruno Fernandes: 8 – Where would the club be without Bruno Fernandes? That is the sentiment that many fans have shared throughout this week and has rung true in recent matches. The captain took his goal brilliantly off a Diogo Dalot cross and was by far the most influential player on the pitch. He also calmly slotted away his penalty in the shootout.

Joshua Zirkzee: 6 – Zirkzee improved as an attacking midfield player, providing key passes and earning fouls with technical dribbling. Unfortunately, he was unable to replicate his penalty success from the Arsenal win.

Rasmus Hojlund: 2 – It was another difficult day for Rasmus Hojlund, who failed to reach ten touches in 68 minutes. The Dane lost possession five times, more than the total number of passes he attempted (4). How much longer can Ruben Amorim afford to start him?

Substitutes

Alejandro Garnacho: 5 – Garnacho has to become more clinical. He had four shots, with two on target off the bench, and should have scored at least once.

Victor Lindelof: 5 – Lindelof was solid defensively, but his penalty miss set the tone shootout and doomed United.

Chido Obi: 6 – Obi provided a danger that United has been missing up front for most of the season. The 17-year-old probably should have scored his first senior goal but had three shots in his 52 minutes. A start is coming.

Casemiro: 6 – When called upon, Casemiro is a tackling machine in the midfield, and he had four off the bench against the Cottagers. He created two chances and scored his penalty.

Ayden Heaven: 7 – Heaven had an impressive first-team debut in extra time. He showed pace and poise in a difficult situation and should get more opportunities before the end of the season.

Man of the Match: Bruno Fernandes
