Starting Eleven
Andre Onana: 6 – Onana’s initial save before Bobby Decordova Reid’s finish was a good one and was more unfortunate than an actual mistake from the United goalkeeper. Thankfully, the Cameroonian only had to make two saves.
Noussair Mazraoui: 6 – Mazraoui put in a shift defensively, contributing with five clearances, four tackles, and three interceptions. With injuries to Lisandro Martinez, Jonny Evans, and Luke Shaw, the Moroccan international may find himself in the back three more often in the second half of the season.
Harry Maguire: 6 – While Maguire’s day at the back was only decent, his match-winning header was perfectly placed and is all that matters in the end.
Leny Yoro: 5 – Yoro’s positioning allowed Bilal El Khannouss the space to cross and create Leicester’s goal. If there is one complaint against the young defender so far, it’s that he has trouble reading runs and players dribbling at pace.
Diogo Dalot: 5 – Dalot improved in the second half but did not have his best day. His appearance on the right, despite the addition of Patrick Dorgu, will raise questions as to what Ruben Amorim’s tactics are at wing back.
Manual Ugarte: 4 – Manuel Ugarte’s attempted nutmeg on Boubacar Soumare gifted the Foxes the opening goal. His three tackles and four interceptions were overshadowed by his lapses in possession and the fact that he was dribbled past on multiple occasions.
Bruno Fernandes: 5 – Outside of the match-winning assist to Harry Maguire on a free kick, Bruno Fernandes did little in the attack. As a deeper-lying player, the captain was unable to get on the ball and dictate play in the final third. Amorim will need to decide where Fernandes’s best position is going forward.
Patrick Dorgu: 5 – Dorgu’s mediocre debut was not helped by Ruben Amorim playing him out of position on the right. As a left-footed player, the 20-year-old is better suited to play as a left wing back and likely would have had a better impact if he played on that side. Dorgu did have one of two first-half shots to go with two tackles and two interceptions.
Amad Diallo: 6 – Amad was quiet in the first half but came alive in the second. The Ivorian seems to enjoy more freedom when playing as a wing back rather than an attacking midfielder.
Kobbie Mainoo: 4 – Not much went right for Mainoo playing in an advanced position. He was unable to create a chance or get a shot off, calling into question whether he could truly play as an attacking midfielder.
Rasmus Hojlund: 4 – Hojlund was largely ineffective again, though he showed a few more flashes of potential in the second half. His flicked shot attempt led to Zirkzee’s goal following a good run across the box.
Substitutes
Alejandro Garnacho: 7 – The match turned when Garnacho entered the fray. The Argentine winger’s eagerness to attack the Leicester defense pushed the Foxes deeper, resulting in a much-improved second-half attacking performance from Manchester United.
Joshua Zirkzee: 7 – Zirkzee came on in the 64th minute and leveled the match in the 68th with a simple finish. The Dutch forward provided another dimension to the United attack while helping to break play up in the midfield with five tackles.
Casemiro: NR – Casemiro came on for a thrilling minute in which the final whistle was blown.
Man of the Match: Alejandro Garnacho
