Manchester United failed to fill the need for a proven goalscorer in the January transfer window, postponing the task until the summer when more funds may be available. Ruben Amorim is an admirer of his former player Viktor Gyorkeres, but Matheus Cunha could offer Manchester United another option with Premier League experience.
According to the Daily Mail, Cunha’s new four-and-a-half-year contract includes a £62 million release clause, which is a reasonable price for a man with eleven goals and four assists in a struggling Wolves team. Transfermarkt has the 25-year-old’s value set at €50 million, though that number was set before the new deal.
Any summer moves by Manchester United for attackers will be contingent on outgoing transfers. Marcus Rashford’s loan move to Aston Villa includes a €40 million buy option, which would be a massive boost for the club should the Villans exercise that option. Antony’s loan does not include a buy option, but a positive spell away from Old Trafford could earn him a permanent move in the summer.
Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelöf are expected to leave the club when their contracts expire at the end of the season. Additionally, Casemiro’s £350,000-a-week contract should be removed from the books through a transfer to Saudi Arabia.
Other Premier League clubs that have reportedly been monitoring Cunha’s situation include Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Nottingham Forest. With each of these sides vying for European football next season, Manchester United may have a mountain to climb to convince Cunha to join.
