In the January transfer window, Manchester United added Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven, while Antony, Marcus Rashford, and Tyrell Malacia left the club on loan. Despite obvious needs, club officials decided to hold off on moves for attack-minded players.

Speaking ahead of the FA Cup Fourth Round match against Leicester City, Ruben Amorim addressed the lack of incoming transfers to United in the January window.

“What I feel is the club is taking its time, we know the urgency of the moment,” Amorim said.

“But I think everybody here doesn’t want to make some mistakes we did in past, we have to improve the players we have, and win some games, in summer we will see. We are being really careful on transfer because we made some mistakes in the past.

“It’s a moment where it is hard to turn things around in a few games, it is going to be like that, hard, until the end of the season. We are taking that risk because we want a different thing in our team, a different profile, that is my area, so my decision on that.

“We will have time to train. I am always complaining. Now we want a certain type of player with a different profile.”

In his explanation, Amorim specifically cites that he wants to improve the players that are currently at United. It’s easy to forget that the 39-year-old has only been at the club since mid-November. While the results have been poor, players are still adapting to the tactics of the new manager, and Amorim is still getting an understanding of his needs and who can be a part of his plans.

He also mentions the ‘mistakes [of] the past.’ While Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes are recent January transfer success stories, Manchester United have also made some questionable decisions in January. A prime example was the deal for Alexis Sanchez, who cost a whopping £560,000 a week for five goals in forty-five appearances.

With 14 league matches and two possible cup runs to go, Ruben Amorim has two new signings and a squad full of talent to improve and make decisions on ahead of the summer transfer window.
