Manchester United’s efforts to redevelop Old Trafford and the surrounding areas have taken another step forward as the UK government announced its backing of the project.

While the club will handle the stadium aspect, the government will assist in developing the area around Old Trafford.

Omar Berrada released a statement after the announcement saying, “The delivery of a world-class stadium can be the catalyst for the major regeneration of an area in Greater Manchester that requires new investment to thrive again.”

“We cannot achieve that wider aim on our own, which is why we welcome the announcement by the Chancellor and the ongoing support of the Mayor of Greater Manchester and Trafford Council. If we work together, there is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a landmark project around Old Trafford that the whole region can be proud of.”

No decision has been made on whether the club will build a new 100,000-seat stadium or renovate Old Trafford. While Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team prefer a new stadium, fans are torn on the decision that could see Manchester United leave the home they have played at since 1910.

More updates will be provided on the project as they are released.
