Manchester United is closing in on Diego Leon as the first signing under Ruben Amorim.

A recent report from journalist Eduardo Burgos suggests that Jason Wilcox is leading the effort to sign the talented 17-year-old left-back. The United technical director has been working behind the scenes with Cerro Porteño to secure the Paraguayan’s signature ahead of other European clubs.

Gabriel Wainer, the sporting chief of Cerro Porteño, confirmed Manchester United’s efforts to sign the Paraguayan player, stating: “Manchester United has a clear intention to sign Diego Leon, but the paperwork has not yet been finalized.” Furthermore, a fee of around $6 million is rumored to have been agreed, according to Roberto Rojas of ESPN.

Leon has made 19 appearances this season for Cerro Porteño, scoring twice since his debut in August. His rapid development has quickly put him on top clubs’ radars, including Arsenal and Manchester City.

Known for his attacking prowess from the full-back position, Leon can create chances by cutting inside and possesses great speed and strength. The 17-year-old would be a perfect project for Amorim, as he could become a long-term star as United’s left-wing-back.

While the signing can be confirmed in January, Leon cannot join the Reds until he turns 18 in April.
