Manchester United have announced that Ruud Van Nistelrooy has left the club now that his interim duties are complete. The Dutchman showed a desire to stay, but Ruben Amorim decided to go a different direction.
In his four matches in charge, Van Nistelrooy won three and drew one, marking a potentially important turnaround after a horrendous start. Wins came against PAOK and Leicester City twice, while the draw was at Old Trafford against a resurgent Chelsea side.
Numerous fans and players expressed their desire for Van Nistelrooy to remain at the club. His passion was evident from the sidelines, which stood in stark contrast to his predecessor. This love for the club and enthusiasm for the role led fans to believe that the 48-year-old could potentially be a candidate for the position of full-time manager in the future.
The man himself admitted ambitions to manage United full-time. When asked about one day managing the club permanently, the Dutchman said: “Yeah, of course. I thought this through well when I made the decision to come to United as an assistant manager or assistant coach. I knew that coming to Manchester United was for me a special occasion, where I felt I wanted to be part of this journey with the club in also an assistant role.”
For now, Ruud Van Nistelrooy departs. Hopefully, though, the Dutchman will gain experience and return to Old Trafford in the future.
