Manchester United has its next head coach, at least, through the end of the season. Former Red Michael Carrick is returning to Old Trafford to be the head coach through the end of the 2025-2026 season.

Ruben Amorim was sacked by the club on January 5th, leaving Manchester United officials searching for an interim head coach/manager. Darren Fletcher took over for two matches, which were losses, but now Carrick, who amassed 464 appearances for United, takes over.

As a player for the club, the Englishman scored 24 goals and registered 35 assists. He also won five Premier League titles, a Champions League title, and an FA Cup. Success at the club level earned him 34 total caps for England.

Carrick previously enjoyed a brief but impressive spell as United’s caretaker manager, overseeing two wins and a draw before Ralf Rangnick’s appointment. That three-game run helped cement his credentials, and the now 43-year-old went on to take charge of Middlesbrough, where he remained until the summer of 2025.

Now with Carrick at the helm on an interim basis, the search for a permanent manager is underway. Names such as Eddie Howe, Andoni Iraola, and Unai Emery are already being linked with the role. One thing is clear: United’s hierarchy cannot afford another misstep after the costly Ten Hag and Amorim appointments.

Can Carrick lead Manchester United back to Europe before that new manager comes in?
