Manchester United could be set to lose one of their brightest academy graduates in years this winter.

Kobbie Mainoo is open to moving away from Old Trafford in search of first-team football and an opportunity to impress Thomas Tuchel ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Enter Napoli.

According to TeamTalk, Napoli are prepared to cover Mainoo’s wages in full and include a buy option in the deal. The Englishman is, as mentioned, desperate to find consistent minutes and the Serie A leaders are ready to offer it.

Mainoo’s rise through the academy was one of United’s biggest success stories in recent years. He made his senior debut in 2022 and quickly earned plaudits for his composure, passing range, and tactical maturity beyond his years. However, a series of managerial changes and tactical tweaks have disrupted his progress, leaving him on the fringes of the current setup.

Mainoo’s limited role under Ruben Amorim has fueled his frustration. The midfielder has featured for just 155 minutes in the Premier League this season, struggling to find a natural place in the Portuguese manager’s system.

Interestingly, Naples has already become something of a haven for ex-United players. Scott McTominay has emerged as one of Serie A’s standout performers, while Rasmus Hojlund has rediscovered his confidence and form in front of goal. Their success could influence Mainoo’s thinking and bolster Napoli’s belief that they can unlock his potential.

While Napoli are leading the chase, several Premier League clubs are also monitoring the situation. Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United are all believed to hold an interest. However, United are reluctant to strengthen a domestic rival, even on a temporary basis.

Should Mainoo depart in January, United are expected to move quickly to reinforce their midfield. Conor Gallagher and Morten Hjulmand are reportedly among the names high on the club’s shortlist.
