Starting Eleven
Senne Lammens: 9 – A first half that included a diving stop and a towering high claim provided Lammens and the fans confidence in his debut early on. That confidence carried into the second half, leading to Manchester United’s first clean sheet of the season. Lammens tallied three saves and two high claims in total and likely locked his place as Amorim’s No. 1.
Leny Yoro: 7 – Yoro was poised on the right side of the back line and even took a few opportunities to make runs forward. He produced a well-rounded defensive performance with three clearances, two interceptions, two tackles, and three duels won.
Matthijs De Ligt: 7 – De Ligt led the defense from the middle and kept the back line organized. His six clearances were the most by any Red.
Luke Shaw: 7 – After struggling in the loss at Brentford, Shaw rebounded with a quality performance on the left. With Lisandro Martinez nearing a return, he will need to find consistency to keep the Argentine out of the starting eleven.
Diogo Dalot: 6 – Dalot was solid down the left playing in an inverted wing back role. He got forward well, attacking space created by the front three, and cleared three times.
Bruno Fernandes: 7 – If not for an impressive save from Robin Roefs, Bruno would have had a goal. He totaled four shots and three key passes in 90 minutes.
Casemiro: 6 – After returning from a sending off for two yellow cards, Casemiro picked up another unnecessary one in the second half against Sunderland. Outside of that mistake, the experienced Brazilian played well alongside Bruno Fernandes in the midfield.
Amad Diallo: 7 – Amad Diallo had space all day long on the right and took it with every opportunity he got. The Ivorian nearly scored against the team he spent time with on loan, but Roefs made a smart save. He also completed an impressive 38 of 38 passes.
Bryan Mbeumo: 7 – Mbeumo’s first assist for Manchester United was a beauty, as he cut inside and picked out Mason Mount, who had found space in the Sunderland box. Mbeumo and Amad combined dangerously down the right all match and clearly enjoy playing together.
Mason Mount: 8 – Mount was a surprise inclusion in the starting eleven ahead of Matheus Cunha, but he repaid his manager’s faith with a goal. His fantastic first touch and side-footed finish gave United the lead in the first ten minutes. Mount’s unmatched energy and effort throughout the match perfectly reflected his usual style of play, and adding a goal on top of that will excite fans if he can continue to be more of a threat in the final third.
Benjamin Sesko: 8 – Sesko scored smartly on a long throw after gambling to get across the visitors’ defense to give United a two-goal lead. Unlike many other striking performances for Manchester United over the past few seasons, Sesko was heavily involved. He held the ball up fantastically and brought other players into attacks, while also doing his duties defensively on set pieces.
Substitutions
Patrick Dorgu: 6 – Dorgu came on for Dalot and tallied a key pass, interception, and tackle in his 26 minutes.
Matheus Cunha: 6 – Why Amorim opted for Mason Mount was made clear after Cunha came on. While the Brazilian is immensely talented, he often refuses to track back, which is something Mount does very well. While he did not perform his defensive duties, Cunha was dangerous and pressured the Sunderland back line relentlessly late on.
Kobbie Mainoo: NR – (77th minute)
Manuel Ugarte: NR – (85th minute)
Harry Maguire: NR – (85th minute)
Man of the Match: Senne Lammens
