It was stressful and sloppy at times, but Manchester United secured a first win of the season at Old Trafford against Burnley. Who stood out for Ruben Amorim’s team that picked up three important points?
Starting Eleven
Altay Bayindir: 4 – Bayindir struggled again as a sloppy save turned into a leveler for Burnley. He does not command his box, meaning the defense is on its own when crosses or set pieces come in.
Leny Yoro: 7 – Yoro was strong again and continues to impress off the right. He made two tackles, including one as the last man, and won four duels.
Matthijs De Ligt: 5 – De Ligt’s positioning was suspect on Lyle Foster’s goal, as he was dragged too far wide. The South African striker also troubled him in the air and held the ball up with little resistance whenever Burnley advanced.
Luke Shaw: 7 – Shaw remains healthy at the start of the season and has been solid on the left side of the back three. He showed his quality in possession and covered space well against Burnley, and should retain his position on the side until Lisandro Martinez returns.
Diogo Dalot: 7 – Dalot caused Kyle Walker all kinds of problems on the left and provided the cut-back assist to Mbeumo. Dorgu was benched, and Dalot made the most of his opportunity.
Bruno Fernandes: 7 – After missing a crucial penalty last week against Fulham, Bruno made no mistake to win the match at Old Trafford. He was good on set pieces and nearly scored on a smart corner from Bryan Mbeumo.
Casemiro: 5 – Casemiro remains a below-par option for Ruben Amorim as a defensive-minded midfielder. The Brazilian was lucky that his free header rebounded off Josh Cullen and won just four of his ten duels.
Amad Diallo: 7 – Amad’s performance overall was good, but he struggled with his final product. He should have scored on a breakaway from a Bryan Mbeumo pass, and his volley was struck well, but straight at Martin Dubravka. Amad’s biggest contribution was winning the penalty that Bruno Fernandes converted in stoppage time.
Mason Mount: 7 – Mount had a very good opening half and was unlucky to come off at halftime. He nearly won a penalty after a great press and hit the crossbar with a brilliant flick header on a set piece.
Bryan Mbeumo: 9 – Mbeumo was excellent and scored his first Premier League goal as a Red with intelligent movement in the box. He should have had an assist, but Amad Diallo blasted a great opportunity over the bar. Despite the team’s struggles, Mbeumo now has two goals in two games.
Matheus Cunha: 6 – Cunha was lively while on the pitch and had a shot on target. Unfortunately, just as things were beginning to look positive for him and United, he went down injured and was forced to exit the game.
Substitutes
Joshua Zirkzee: 6 – Zirkzee was lively after coming on but lacked a real goal threat. He took seven shots, but had just one on target.
Kobbie Mainoo: 5 – Mainoo came on at the half and was not quite as effective as he was against Grimsby Town.
Benjamin Sesko: 6 – Sesko was held off until the end by Ruben Amorim due to his fitness levels. He was an immediate threat and had two genuine opportunities to score, but missed the target. Despite the lack of goals, Sesko’s movement in attack has been effective, and it is only a matter of time before he finds the net.
Noussair Mazraoui: NR – It was good to see Mazraoui return to the pitch after his recent injury problems.
Man of the Match: Bryan Mbeumo
