Starting Eleven
Andre Onana: 1 – United will certainly be pushing forward with the signing of Senne Lammens after Onana’s performance. The Cameroonian’s first game back in the team should be his last for the club after two errors leading to goals. Instead of atoning for his mistakes, Onana was scored on twelve more times in the penalty shootout.
Tyler Fredricson: 3 – Fredricson lost Charles Vernam at the back post for Grimsby’s opening goal and seemed out of his depth, even against lesser competition. He was replaced by Matthijs De Ligt at half.
Harry Maguire: 5 – As the experienced player in a young back three, Maguire failed to keep his line organized in the first half. Despite his shortcomings, the England international scored the leveler late in normal time to force penalties.
Ayden Heaven: 4 – Like Fredricson, Heaven’s defensive positioning was suspect. He won just four of ten duels and was eventually taken off when Mason Mount entered. Despite his struggles, Heaven’s diving block in the second half kept Grimsby from scoring a third goal, keeping the Reds in the game.
Diogo Dalot: 3 – Going forward, Dalot offered little until the second half. Defensively, he left gaps and could have done more to protect Tyler Fredricson when the young defender was on.
Kobbie Mainoo: 7 – Mainoo was one of the few Manchester United players who looked up to the match. The young midfielder was credited with the assist to Bryan Mbeumo and made several driving runs that pushed United forward.
Manuel Ugarte: 4 – Ugarte could not break up the counters of the hosts and was ineffective as the defensive-minded midfielder. He was replaced at half by Bruno Fernandes.
Patrick Dorgu: 4 – Dorgu was one of three players who did not make it past halftime. He often found himself in space on the left, but his crossing was poor, and he was caught too far up the field when Grinsby countered.
Amad Diallo: 3 – Amad’s performance was awful, and he failed to make an impact going forward. His decision-making in the final third ended several promising attacks, and he lost possession too often trying to dribble through opponents.
Matheus Cunha: 4 – Cunha was active in attack but again did not register a goal or assist. Five of his six attempts on goal were blocked, though his teammates did little to help create shooting space for him. His penalty miss was weak and eventually led to the loss.
Benjamin Sesko: 4 – Sesko managed two shots on target but could not score in his first start. The worrying thing was that out of eleven penalty takers, the new striker took number ten.
Substitutes
Matthijs De Ligt: 6 – De Ligt came on the field and was as much of a threat as any attacker. He remains the standout player in the young season for Ruben Amorim.
Bruno Fernandes: 6 – Bruno was heavily involved in his half on the pitch and scored both penalties he took. If there is a positive to take away, it’s that he responded to his weekend miss with those two finishes.
Bryan Mbeumo: 6 – Mbeumo came off the bench and saved United (in regular time). He slotted the ball into the bottom corner with accuracy for his goal and calmly scored his first penalty. His second was poor, as he hit the crossbar, sending United out of the Cup.
Mason Mount: 6 – Mount came on in the middle of the second half and provided an excellent assist to Harry Maguire.
Joshua Zirkzee: 5 – Zirkzee brought fight onto the pitch for the final minutes and scored his penalty confidently.
