Manchester United ended the tour of the United States with a 2-2 draw against Everton in Atlanta. With two weeks to go before the opening match against Arsenal, below are the positives and the negatives of the state of Ruben Amorim’s team.

The Good

Attackers Connecting

Manchester United’s attack has evolved this summer, boosted by both existing players and new signings. In the win over Bournemouth, players from last season influenced the four goals scored. Against Everton, it was a mix of the new and old.

The draw marked the first time Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo played together, and while it was choppy at times, both players look set to be difference makers.

One-touch, quick passing has been a theme of the preseason and has elevated United going forward, an improvement over the slow, not-so-methodical attacks of last season.

Leny Yoro

Leny Yoro is poised to emerge as one of the Premier League’s top defenders this season. After an inconsistent debut campaign at United that was hampered by injuries, the 19-year-old now looks ready to make a real impact on the right side of the defense.

He was near flawless at the back in the final Tour match, showing off his maturity in positioning, reading of the opposing attack, and quick reactions to thwart chances. Yoro also showed his ability on the ball, speeding past players and not being afraid to attempt a difficult pass.

Midfield and Attacking Press

A 15U team could have broken United’s press last season with ease, but this year, Amorim has his players pressing like he wants. The attacking and midfield players caused panic for Everton, winning the ball in positive areas multiple times.

A solid press can springboard the attack, which was what the manager was hoping for last season after implementing the tactic. Now, with improvements clear, United will have an additional dimension that will cause headaches for the opposition.

The Bad

Physicality Issues

The biggest challenge for Amorim’s side against Everton was dealing with the opposition’s physicality. Beto, James Garner, and Michael Keane all posed problems for United throughout the match. Matthijs de Ligt struggled in particular, as Beto repeatedly outmuscled and turned the Dutch defender, using his hold-up play to spark Everton attacks.

Manchester United face one of the most physical sides in the league to start the season, Arsenal, and will need to improve ahead of the match to start the campaign off strong.

Turnovers Punished

A recurring theme in Manchester United’s struggles last season was costly mistakes being punished. Everton’s goal just before halftime was a painful reminder, echoing last season’s habit of conceding due to careless errors.

Against Everton, Manuel Ugarte, who has had a solid preseason, was the culprit. After the ball was cleared to him, the Uruguayan took one too many touches dribbling and lost possession. Idrissa Gueye pounced on the ball and whipped in a cross, finding Ndiaye in a mismatch against Bruno Fernandes, who couldn’t prevent the goal.
