Matheus Cunha has arrived, and after just a few preseason performances, is ready to help unlock a new Manchester United attack.

For years, United’s lone key man has been Bruno Fernandes. Players have come and gone, one-season wonders have hit highs then dramatic lows, and new signings have flopped. Yet one man has remained a constant, the Portuguese Magnifico. In 290 appearances for the club, the 30-year-old has 184 goal contributions, an astounding stat given some of the players who have been around him.

Now, though, the burden may be lightened by Matheus Cunha.

Matheus Cunha stands apart from many of Manchester United’s recent attacking signings for one key reason: he’s already a proven performer in the Premier League. Last season, he delivered his most productive campaign yet, scoring 15 goals and providing six assists. Importantly, this wasn’t a one-off, as his form the year prior showed similar promise, proving his consistency at the top level.

Now, as a Manchester United player, he is ready to lighten the load that Bruno Fernandes has carried for years. Cunha’s dynamism in attack can create more space for Bruno, allowing him time to create for teammates and himself. We have already seen glimpses of what Cunha can bring to United, and the Reds’ dominance in the preseason win over West Ham showed promise.

The new No. 10 fired three shots in the win and showcased his quality both on the ball and out of possession. Defensively, he was impactful, winning two tackles, making two interceptions, and blocking two shots against the Hammers. That level of commitment from the front is something Bruno Fernandes has consistently shown over the years, but few others have matched.

By drawing defensive attention, defending from the front, and easing the creative burden, Cunha has the potential to elevate Bruno Fernandes’ influence. The new dynamic duo, along with recent signing Bryan Mbeumo, can provide the attacking spark that Ruben Amorim needs.
