Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes rejected a lucrative offer to stay at Old Trafford. Saudi Pro League giants Al Hilal, the most successful side in the country, offered the 30-year-old a staggering £700,000 per week deal through 2028.

Manchester United stood to gain significantly as well, with Al Hilal reportedly ready to pay £100 million for the Portuguese star. But it was Bruno himself who ultimately turned down the move, choosing to remain a Red and continue leading the club he loves.

A Legend Weighs In

Gary Neville discussed Bruno’s decision when speaking to Sky Sports this week.

“It’s significant. I think the money that was on the table was big, so I think there was an element of this situation that meant United getting that level of money for someone of Bruno’s age, you couldn’t say it was a bad deal.

“But on the other hand, he is Manchester United’s star player and only player at times, for the last four or five years, it’s been Bruno Fernandes. He is the one who I can point at being a success out of the big signings they’ve made.”

On the loyalty Fernandes showed by staying, Neville said:

“But the fact he’s stayed will endear him to United fans even more. The idea to turn that money down at a point when United are at their lowest ebb and say ‘I want to fight’.

“I think that says a lot about him as a person, as a character and I think United fans will warm to that because at this moment in time, the club needs people who will run through a brick wall.”

Why It’s Good for Football

Bruno Fernandes has been the rock keeping a fragile Manchester United grounded for several years. Without him, the club certainly would have never won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup under Erik Ten Hag. He has been the most successful player at an underperforming European giant.

Considering the current turmoil in Manchester, no one would have blamed Bruno for leaving, especially considering the money and the opportunity to play at the Club World Cup. However, Bruno decided to stay with the club he loves, rejecting the audacious offer to help United return to the top.

In recent years, many players have left Europe’s top leagues, drawn by the financial lure of Saudi Arabia. Stars in their prime — including Rúben Neves, Ivan Toney, Jhon Durán, and Franck Kessié — opted to trade elite competition for lucrative contracts in a less demanding league.

Bruno Fernandes sets an example for young footballers. He shows that loyalty still exists in football today and that despite United’s current struggles, he wants to be a part of the next chapter.

Bruno Fernandes is an example of what it means to play with heart and soul for a club. Bruno Fernandes is Manchester United.
