Manchester United have joined the race for soon-to-be free agent Jonathan Tah. The 29-year-old’s contract expires at the end of June, and he will leave Bayer Leverkusen after ten years with the club. According to Sky Sports, United are considering a move for the defender to strengthen the back line ahead of a crucial season for Ruben Amorim.
Jonathan Tah confirmed earlier this season that he wanted to leave Bayer Leverkusen. The center back has been the subject of speculation for the past several summers and will finally leave the club he helped win the league last season.
Since the 2014-2015 season, Tah has made 399 appearances for Die Werkself, scoring 17 times and assisting 13 goals. He sits 6th all-time in appearances for the club.
After a recent match against St. Pauli, Tah restated his intentions to leave this season, saying, “Everything was said from the start. There was a point in time when I made the decision not to extend my contract and not to stay here and it remains that way now.”
If Manchester United could lure Tah to Old Trafford, it would be a steal for a club in need of quality and experience. The Reds will lose depth at center back this summer, with Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans expected to leave.
Tah is valued at €30 million by Transfermarkt. Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and FC Barcelona are also in the running for the Germany international.
Joining Bayern Munich would keep Tah in Germany, while a move to Madrid would pair him with his international teammate Antonio Rudiger. Despite these advantages, Manchester United remains hopeful that the right contract offer could bring the experienced defender to the club.
