Diogo Dalot, one of the most important players for Manchester United this season, could miss the final month of the campaign after suffering a calf injury.
Speaking on the new injury, Ruben Amorim said, “He has a problem with his muscle in his calf. He had a sequence of games, he played all the time. We tried to manage but some of the players have to play a lot of minutes and we have to protect the ones that we think are not so ready to cope with that, but Dalot felt something.”
Dalot is tied for the most appearances for the club this season with Alejandro Garnacho at 51 and has the most starts of any Red with 49. All three of Dalot’s goals this campaign have come in the Europa League, including a strong finish in the recent Lyon thriller.
With Dalot out, Noussair Mazraoui could move up into a wing-back position. The Moroccan international has spent most of his time this season as a center back, mostly due to injury issues at the position and Dalot’s availability.
Another option could be young defender Harry Amass. The 18-year-old has started on the left in several matches recently and impressed. Patrick Dorgu would play on the right if Amass is selected for the critical matches ahead.
Dalot’s calf injury comes at a poor time, as Manchester United’s first leg against Athletic Bilbao is in just six days. Ruben Amorin will have a major decision to make regarding who he decides to fill the gap left by the Portuguese right back.
