Starting Eleven
Andre Onana: 6 – Onana did not make any mistakes that cost the Reds, though there may have been more that he could have done on the second goal and the penalty. Despite all his struggles, he showed passion and fight and deserves credit for keeping his head high through a difficult patch.
Noussair Mazraoui: 7 – Mazraoui was solid in the back and played a perfect long ball over the top to Bruno Fernandes to help set up the first goal. He went off at the half for Luke Shaw.
Harry Maguire: 8 – Maguire’s defending, especially in the second half and extra time, was not quite up to par. His header, however, was a thing of beauty and will forever live in the minds of the fans who saw it. Maguire also picked up the assist for Dalot’s goal with a beautiful ball over the top.
Leny Yoro: 7 – Yoro gave everything defensively, even making a block with his head on the ground in the box. He also cleared nine times, made four tackles, and intercepted twice.
Diogo Dalot: 7 – Dalot took his goal expertly, backing down his defender and finding the far corner. The right back nearly assisted the goal of the season to Bruno with a ball over the top, but the volley struck the crossbar. He could have been better in possession, but he gave everything and made a massive impact on the result.
Manuel Ugarte: 8 – Ugarte was immense in the midfield and was credited with twelve defensive actions, including five interceptions and four tackles. His delayed run into the box for his goal was smart, and if he continues to work on his attacking game, he will be unstoppable as a box-to-box midfielder.
Casemiro: 9 – Casemiro took over in the second half of extra time. He won the penalty that Bruno scored, assisted Kobbie Mainoo’s goal with a quick pass, and assisted Harry Maguire’s winner with a perfectly placed cross. Could he be playing his way into another year at Old Trafford?
Patrick Dorgu: 6 – Dorgu had a solid day on the left, though he was not able to put in as many crosses as usual. He contributed with four tackles defensively.
Alejandro Garnacho: 8 – Garnacho is finally starting to collect goal contributions. His assist to Ugarte was world-class, as he rounded two defenders with a single touch and found the Uruguayan running in. He could have put the game away early in the second half and needs to work on his composure in one-on-one opportunities.
Bruno Fernandes: 8 – If Bruno had scored the over-the-shoulder volley, he would have been the man of the match. The club captain calmly slotted his penalty into the corner and had two other shots on target.
Rasmus Hojlund: 6 – Hojlund played well, creating multiple chances and holding up play well. He had three key passes, which was as many as Garnacho and more than Bruno.
Substitutes
Luke Shaw: 3 – Shaw struggled off the bench and is not yet match-fit enough to play important minutes. After the match, Shaw gave Harry Maguire a big hug, likely thanking his defensive partner for saving him from heavier criticism in a loss.
Mason Mount: 5 – Mount was quiet after coming on, though he did win four of his five duels.
Kobbie Mainoo: 8 – Mainoo has a knack for scoring important goals, and his finish into the far corner was curled perfectly around Perri in goal. The goal was made even better as he used Joshua Zirkzee’s celebration.
Harry Amass: 6 – Amass’s opportunities are coming more frequently, and with all focus shifting to the Europa League, the 18-year-old could see more action in league play. Also, he gets a pass-to-assist for Harry Maguire’s leveler as he helped create space for Casemiro before passing to the Brazilian.
Christian Eriksen: 4 – Eriksen did little in his 20 minutes even though the match fit him with less back-and-forth play.
Man of the Match: Casemiro
