Rayan Cherki’s late equalizer last Thursday has set up a fantastic Europa League Quarter-Final second leg between Manchester United and Lyon. With the tie level on aggregate, it’s all to play for at Old Trafford this week.
With a final chance at silverware on the line, who will be available for Ruben Amorim’s starting eleven?
Team News
Andre Onana, whose mistakes cost the Reds dearly in the first leg, should return in goal after Altay Bayindir’s struggles at Newcastle.
Manchester United’s newest injury is Joshua Zirkzee, who pulled up grabbing his hamstring after a mazy run against Newcastle. Speaking on the Dutchman, Ruben Amorim said, “Josh, I think he will be out for some games. So, let’s focus on the next one [against Lyon].”
Zirkzee’s injury is a huge loss for the attack. The 23-year-old had been improving and scored in the first leg with an 89th-minute header. Rasmus Hojlund is the only striker available, as Chido Obi was not registered ahead of the knockout rounds.
Harry Maguire was rested at St. James’ Park and will return to the heart of the defense on Thursday.
Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo have recently returned, and while neither player is likely ready to start, either could make an impact off the bench.
Ayden Heaven was on the bench for the first time on Sunday since his injury last month. However, he is not expected to feature as he works toward match fitness.
Matthijs De Ligt is back at Carrington but has not yet returned to first-team training. While unavailable for Thursday, De Ligt is targeting a return before the end of the season.
Amad has also begun individual work on grass as he targets a return in May. If United progress in the Europa League, the Ivorian could provide a huge attacking boost as the Reds push for Champions League football.
Lisandro Martinez and Jonny Evans remain out with long-term injuries.
