Manchester United’s hope to secure Champions League football for next season rides on winning the Europa League. After a shaky performance in the 0-0 draw against Manchester City, the Reds need to find answers in attack to beat Lyon.
Team News
Ruben Amorim has slowly been getting players back from injury, and there are no new concerns after the Manchester Derby.
Harry Maguire started and played 58 minutes against City on Sunday after missing time due to injury. After the draw, Amorim cited a minutes limitation for the defender, saying, “Harry Maguire just had 60 minutes allowed from the medical department to play, so he’s fit and ready to go.” A few added days of rest should mean that Maguire is ready to go without a limit on Thursday.
Matthijs De Ligt picked up a knock against Nottingham Forest last week and missed Sunday’s Derby. The Dutch defender should be back and in the lineup for the critical first leg.
Kobbie Mainoo returned to training last week but was not selected for the Derby. Speaking after the match about the 19-year-old’s availability for Lyon, Amorim said, “Kobbie Mainoo is training with us, we want to be careful, again, with our players, but maybe he’s going to be in our squad.”
Another recent returnee, Mason Mount, could be more involved after a couple of appearances off the bench.
Ayden Heaven remains a doubt but could return in the next few games.
Lisandro Martinez, Amad Diallo, and Jonny Evans will not be available and will remain out with long-term injuries, though there is still hope that Amad could return next month.
