Second-half goals from Diogo Dalot and Kobbie Mainoo secured a third-place finish for Manchester United in the Europa League league phase and an automatic entry into the Round of 16 of the competition.
Match Flow
Christian Eriksen and Kobbie Mainoo both had chances to put Manchester United ahead in the first twenty minutes. In the 16th minute, Eriksen saw his left-footed shot saved by Stefan Târnovanu, and two minutes later, Mainoo sent a well-placed cut-back from Rasmus Hojlund over the bar.
Manchester United ended the first half with over two-thirds of the possession, but they were unable to capitalize on their dominance. Although the Reds controlled the ball well, the home team effectively defended and made it difficult for United to penetrate and create scoring opportunities.
Despite a few forays forward of their own in the opening half, FCSB never threatened Altay Bayindir’s goal.
The introductions of Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho brought new life and energy to United’s attack. With his first touches of the match, Garnacho ran onto a loose back pass and hit the post with an effort that he should have scored on.
Bruno Fernandes came close to scoring a spectacular goal from long range, but his shot crashed off the crossbar. Moments later, Kobbie Mainoo slipped behind the FCSB defense and delivered a cross to Diogo Dalot, who easily tapped the ball into the net, giving Manchester United a 1-0 lead.
The hosts nearly leveled immediately with an incredible strike from Daniel Bîrligea, but like with Bruno Fernandes, his shot struck the bar and stayed out of the United goal.
Kobbie Mainoo extended Manchester United’s lead in the 68th minute with a well-placed finish, assisted by Alejandro Garnacho. The 19-year-old executed a delayed one-two with the Argentine before calmly finishing, securing a 2-0 lead for the Reds.
While FCSB created a few half chances, the Reds comfortably secured the win after Mainoo’s goal and nearly added to their tally on several occasions.
Analysis
Ruben Amorim’s halftime substitutions significantly changed the match. While United appeared comfortable in the first half, their attacks were slow, allowing the hosts to regroup and defend effectively. However, the introduction of Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo added much-needed pace and creativity to the attacks, with Garnacho providing the assist for Mainoo’s goal.
Lisandro Martinez has continued to be a threat in attack over the past few weeks. The Argentine defender assisted goals against Rangers and Manchester City and scored against Liverpool. In Romania, Martinez created a big chance and had three key passes, showcasing an attacking ability that has become influential for the Reds.
