As soon as the word broke that Manchester United’s contract negotiations with Kobbie Mainoo had stalled, teams began to keep tabs. The talented 19-year-old is one of the best young midfielders in the world and has an incredibly bright future.

Despite high interest from other clubs, it is becoming increasingly clear that while the two sides have yet to reach an agreement, Mainoo wants to stay, and United wants to keep him. According to Fabrizio Romano, the delay is primarily due to the changes at the club rather than major issues with the negotiation itself.

In his CaughtOffside Daily Briefing, the journalist stated:

“We’ve had many stories in recent days about the future of Kobbie Mainoo at Manchester United. He remains an important player for the club, which Ruben Amorim has confirmed publicly in his recent press conference.”

“So, why this situation with Mainoo’s contract still not being signed? Already one year ago, January-February 2024, Man United tried to extend Mainoo’s contract, but then the whole structure changed.”

“There have been plenty of changes internally at Manchester United, which means it’s different people negotiating the contract. This can be complicated when there are still important details to clarify and finalise.”

“Still, United are relaxed about the situation. They are negotiating and they believe everything is under control, even if there are points to clarify in this new conversation.”

“Overall, Mainoo is happy at Manchester United and not desperate to leave at all, so conversations are ongoing to resolve his future at Old Trafford.”

This report from Romano will instill a sense of relief in many United fans. Kobbie Mainoo has been forming a formidable partnership with Manuel Ugarte in Ruben Amorim’s midfield, which due to the age of the players, has a chance to become world-class in the coming years.

United Beyond Manchester published an article last week explaining why a transfer, particularly to Chelsea, was improbable. Now, after clarity provided by Romano, a transfer appears increasingly unlikely as we await a contract agreement between United and the Mainoo.
