Ruben Amorim secured a massive first Premier League win at Old Trafford on Sunday. The 39-year-old manager will feel that momentum is on his team’s side with big matches against Arsenal and Manchester City looming.
Match Flow
A slow start for United led to a dominant spell for Everton. Andre Onana made just one save in the first half, though Beto missed a clear-cut chance when he rounded Onana and missed wide. The visitors paid for their missed chances, and the Reds struck first just past the half-hour mark.
Bruno Fernandes delivered an excellent corner kick that Marcus Rashford capitalized on and successfully finished. The well-executed corner provided Rashford with the time and space needed to strike cleanly, and the ball deflected off Jarrad Branthwaite into the net.
From that point on, it was all Manchester United.
In the 41st minute, Amad Diallo won the ball off of Branthwaite, providing Bruno Fernandes a chance to play a low cross that was finished first-time by Joshua Zirkzee. It was the Dutch forward’s first goal since an opening-night winner against Fulham.
The Reds grabbed the match-sealing goal just after halftime. Amad Diallo broke away down the right side and slipped Rashford in for his second finish of the game.
Zirkzee secured his brace in the 64th, with Amad Diallo assisting again off an Everton defensive mistake. United cruised the rest of the way to a 4-0 victory over the Toffees.
Brief Analysis
In the past two matches, Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund have each scored twice. Those four goals are more than the two players had combined before Ruben Amorim’s arrival.
Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes each contributed two assists, filling their roles in the attack brilliantly. Amad is especially thriving in his wing-back position, giving Ruben Amorim plenty to think about for this season and next.
While there were more shaky moments in the back, clear improvements have already been made over the past few matches. This win marked the first clean sheet with the new three-back system, and Andre Onana was rarely tested.
What’s Next?
Manchester United travel to Arsenal on Wednesday with attacking momentum. Even with Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo suspended, the Reds have to feel confident going to the Emirates.
Can the Reds beat the Gunners away to push closer to the Top 4?
