New boss Ruben Amorim is getting his bearings at Carrington while many Reds are on international duty. He may be unfamiliar with the training facility, but he knows Old Trafford all too well from his playing days.
At Braga, the former midfielder battled United greats such as Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie, and David De Gea in the 2012 Champions League.
Manchester United, coming off a 2-1 victory over CFR Cluj, hosted Braga at Old Trafford. After a falling out at Benfica, Ruben Amorim was loaned to Braga, setting up a now relevant meeting between the new manager and his new team.
The Portuguese visitors shocked the Old Trafford faithful and raced to a 2-0 lead in the first twenty minutes. Club captain Alan netted both goals for the Braguistas. However, this was a Sir Alex Ferguson-led team, meaning the match was far from over.
Five minutes after Alan’s second, Chicharito headed home to bring United within one. Shinji Kagawa expertly found the Mexican forward after brilliant work from Van Persie on the wing.
Jonny Evans leveled the score in the second half. Yes, the same Jonny Evans that Ruben Amorim will now manage at Manchester United. The ball fell the feet of the then 24-year-old center-back, and he forced it through a crowd and into the net to make it 2-2.
Chicharito cemented himself as the hero of the day with a 75th-minute winner to complete the United comeback. The young forward latched onto another header, this time from Rafael, to put the Reds ahead for good.
Ruben Amorim finished the day with 94% passing accuracy, a key pass, and three tackles in 80 minutes of action.
Manchester United would go on to lose in the Round of 16 to Real Madrid after a costly red card from Nani in the first leg.
The 39-year-old manager failed to win at Old Trafford during his playing days, but better results are sure to follow as he takes the helm at United. Amorim’s first game in charge of United at home will come on 28 November against Bodø/Glimt in the Europa League.
