Manchester United’s issues will not simply be fixed with a coaching change. The squad needs to be updated, and Ruben Amorim will look for reinforcements starting in the January transfer window. So, who should the club look to this winter?
Antonee Robinson
Manchester United needs a left-back. Not one time this season has a left-back started for the Reds. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have both failed to get healthy thus far and are not dependable players. Antonee Robinson would bring talent and Premier League experience to United while also adding health to a position that has lacked it for several years.
The United States international’s six assists from the back last season led him to be crowned Fulham’s Player of the Season. This year, he has two assists in nine league appearances.
Ruben Amorim will need outside backs who can attack and defend at a high level, and Robinson can do both.
Rivals Liverpool are also interested in the 27-year-old, who would reportedly cost between €30 and €40 million.
Ruben Amorim needs to bring stability back to Old Trafford quickly, and a move for Robinson could solidify an unstable position.
Chris Rigg
After losing out on previous Championship stars such as Jude Bellingham, Manchester United should act swiftly to win the race for Chris Rigg. The Sunderland product is also attracting interest from Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
Last season, as a 16-year-old, Rigg made twenty-one league appearances, scoring twice. In twelve appearances this season, the now 17-year-old has three goals, already outscoring his 2023-2024 total.
Transfermarkt lists Rigg’s value at €9m, though any transfer will likely cost more, especially if multiple clubs pursue him simultaneously.
If United signs the young midfielder this January, he may be able to bring an instant impact, though a time of development would be more likely.
The signing of Chris Rigg would bring one of the best young midfielders in the world to Old Trafford and help complete a fantastic transfer window for Ruben Amorim.
