Manchester United traveled to the London Stadium seeking back-to-back wins for the first time this season in the Premier League. Instead, Erik Ten Hag and his side found frustration and another league loss.
The Reds spurned chance after chance in the first 25 minutes. United consistently broke the West Ham defense down with ease yet could not finish any of the chances created. The best opportunity early fell to Alejandro Garnacho, who should have scored in the opening two minutes of the match.
Diogo Dalot got in behind in the 31st minute, flicked past Lukasz Fabianksi in goal, and smashed the ball over the net. It was a striking representation of United’s dominance yet inability to finish in the first half.
The visiting Reds finished the half with eight attempts to West Ham’s one and 57% possession. Dominance matters little if the ball does not hit the back of the net, and it cost United today.
Crysencio Summerville opened the scoring for West Ham in the second half before Casemiro headed home to level in the 81st minute.
A very questionable penalty was awarded to West Ham despite minimal contact on Danny Ings. Jarrod Bowen stepped up and scored to give the hosts a stoppage-time lead and victory.
While United and Ten Hag will feel injustice over the penalty, the inability to finish continues to haunt the Reds. Multiple clear-cut chances were missed in the first half, which kept the Hammers in the match, ultimately helping them steal three points.
Manchester United sit 14th in the Premier League with just two wins in nine matches.
Erik Ten Hag’s side host a resurgent Chelsea next Sunday.
