After the hype and discussion this week around a matchup between current and former Manchester United managers, neither boss was able to claim all three points. Christian Eriksen’s first-half goal for United was canceled out by En-Nesyri’s second-half goal in the 1-1 draw.
A brilliantly worked move opened the scoring for the Reds in the 15th minute. Quick passing led to a layoff by Joshua Zirkzee to Christian Eriksen, who placed the ball from the top of the box into the Fenerbahçe net.
After the United goal, the hosts picked up their play, and Andre Onana was forced into a stunning double save in the 36th minute. The Cameroonian finished the half with three total saves.
The home side came out quickly in the second period and leveled within the first five minutes. A quality cross from Allan Saint-Maximin provided an easy header for Youssef En-Nesyri that left Onana no chance.
A penalty appeal in the 58th minute from Fenerbahçe led to the dismissal of Jose Mourinho against his former club. The contact was minimal, and VAR affirmed the on-field decision.
A difficult season got worse for Antony, who only lasted fourteen minutes off the bench before a lower leg injury ended his night.
After three matches in Europe this season, United has neither won nor lost and has three draws for three points. Results will need to improve if the Reds want to advance in the competition, and a failure to qualify for the next round will add massive pressure on Erik Ten Hag.
Manchester United’s next match in the Europa League will come on November 7th against PAOK at Old Trafford.
